Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds it annoying when I run into a "captcha". The purpose is to keep non-human automated spammers from commenting by requiring the reader to type the characters in the "captcha" into the blank. One of the reasons I get annoyed by "captcha" is that the characters are often indecipherable. Take this one for example:
Is this supposed to be "SEB" or "SEr3"? Your guess is probably better than mine.
But at least I don't have to use the option in which the reader clicks the universal icon for handicap - a wheelchair - in order to have the characters audibly read. Have you ever tried to use that option after giving up the attempt to interpret a series of illegible characters in frustration? Here's a video-recorded example of what you might hear:
What's my solution?
I moderate comments. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and I've only run into one spammer in all that time. I simply marked the comment as spam,, and it disappeared in the void. I moderate comments for another reason: I want to be sure that the comments that wind up on my blog aren't overtly rude, hostile, or profane. So since I'd moderate anyway, I much prefer to screen out potential spammers that way.
And I certainly haven't found myself overwhelmed with spam.
What about you? Do you use captcha for your blog? Have you tried simply moderating comments instead? If so, have you found spammers have found a way to wiggle past that and post spam comments anyway? Do you find it annoying when you run into "captcha", or am I just a crabby old lady?
Be careful how you answer that. Remember: I moderate comments!
Visit Post-It-Note Tuesdays!

I'm with you! Let's get rid of Captcha! Please! It's so annoying! Comments can be moderated. Install an anti-spam plugin like Akismet. Or if you're a Disqus user like I am, turn on the anti-spam feature. Anyways, thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm already a follower on GFC. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't say that I moderate at all. I use intense debate to have commentluv, like wordpress blogs. Because I like that I can reply directly to their comments. SO in a way, yes I can moderate, by removing, or editing a comment that's left on my blog, but I allow it to be posted without me having to accept it. Stopping by from PINT! I am a new follower.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Captcha drives me right round the end. There have been a few times when it takes me longer to do the Captcha than it does the comment itself. Very frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind them terribly....UNLESS I guess wrong and it erases my whole comment that I just typed out. Then it pisses me off.

And the older you get, the more difficult the captcha gets. It must sense your slowly failing eyesight!
ReplyDeleteFollowing you back, thanks!
CAPTCHA drives me nuts and I would think the above thing is SE 13 - I don't know. If I'm going to have to put it in, I'm okay with that as long as I can read it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I have to refresh the captcha several times to get a legible one, I just bail on the blog. It would be helpful to bloggers if a service actually gave them an example of the captcha so that the blogger can choose a good one.
I think a lot of bloggers don't see what their readers are seeing. This is why I took it off of my blog and use Akismet instead (glorious plug in).
I don't use captcha because I've found that I don't get enough spam for it to be a problem. By the way, I'm following back.
ReplyDeleteI have been blogging since 2005 and have never moderated (except on posts over a month old) or used captcha but I no longer allow anonymous comments. Since 2005 I have only deleted a handful of comments and none after I disallowed anon comments. I prefer to trust bloggers and not insert myself in the middle of their conversations with moderation. But I do understand why folks choose to moderate if they have had a bad experience with comments.
ReplyDeleteYes, please! Blogger has made recent changes which included making changes to your blog comments.

I killed mine recently -- once I understood I could still moderate comments. I do get more spam now, but not much. It's worth it to make the blog more user friendly. You're not a crabby old lady :)
ReplyDelete@Karen - My spam went down dramatically once I stopped allowing anon comments.
ReplyDeleteOh yes...DISLIKE the captcha too it is often hard to figure out what the letter is. Thanks for stopping by, now following you back from Adventures at Greenacre
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly! It especially get super annoying when you're trying to enter a giveaway and have to do it for every single entry. Oy! Thanks! Have a great day and God bless!
I've only been blogging for less than a year and did'nt realise the word verification was called a captcha. I personally hate captcha's and don't use them and so far crossing my digits I've only had one spam comment. My blogs are craft related and I've found other crafters to be really kind with their comments even though I'm happy to recieve constructive criticism.
ReplyDeleteKathleen x
I gotta start moderating too! Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteI'm following now from welcome wednesday blog hop. I would really appreciate it if you can follow back :) Thanks!!!

I find it Very annoying as well.
ReplyDeleteI HATE CAPTCHA! I'm am not vision-impaired, but I cannot see a lot of them. They look fuzzy and the letters run together.
ReplyDeleteI don't even moderate any more. I just delete any that are inappropriate or spam. I also use Blogger's automatic spam feature. It catches most spam before I ever see it.
I agree whole heartedly. Down with Captcha.
ReplyDelete(Not to be snobby, but I most often see it on the smaller blogs. Do those blogs really get that much spam? Compare to the big guys. They never have Captcha.)
I get a lot of spam, but I have a plug in that handles it all. I think maybe only one spam message has actually made it through to my blog in two years.
People want comments, but they add hurdles to their readers. Set the comments free, folks. Kill Captcha.
I can't stand captcha. Hate it hate it hate it. For the very reason you show above. I can't ever read the darn things!
ReplyDeleteAmy @ A Little Nosh
AMEN!!! They drive me batty! I haven't had a problem with spammers as of yet, hopefully never!
ReplyDeleteHappy to be your newest follower! I hope I will see you soon at www.jonathanhowefineart.com
I moderate my comments and so far spams are caught in the background. I am not crazy about captcha either because I feel like I am working too hard to live a simple comments. So I will exit without living comment.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that just makes me live a blog immediately are those pop up windows prmising a free book or tips if I put in my email. I see them I leave because they are just annoying. It feels like a bunch of red tapes jut to read somones opinion.
Holla BTW from blog frog

Amen! I stumbled the post because there are so many people who need to get rid of it. I get LOTS Of spam comments but blogger now filters most of them. I'd rather sort through comments than subject my visitors to illegible letters. And yes I've tried listening to it via audio. Even worse!

YES YES YES! Drives me bananas! All my spam gets caught by the filter and I moderate, but have never not published something...
ReplyDeleteI hate those things! Very funny! I am a new follower from the Thankful Thursday! Stop by and follow my blog if you get a chance!

I totally agree. Captcha has its purpose, but not on blogs. I don't even moderate...I like living on the wild side. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Minx Design - I'm following you back now! :)
Captcha drives me batty. I just started my blog so I'm getting only a few comments. Not sure what I'll do if they begin coming in more often.
ReplyDeleteI moderate comments as well. There are times those captcha's are annoying. LOL
ReplyDeletedie captcha die!! hate hate hate them!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started blogging, I put captcha on trying to be a "good blogger." Then I saw what a pain it was on other blogs, so I took it off. I haven't had any problems with spam at all.. Blogger has a pretty good spam blocker now, so I think the captcha is really unnecessary anymore.

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Confessions of a Marine Wife i'm now following you back.
ReplyDeleteWhoever designs captchas is definitely devious!! I hate them too. Also, on a side topic, the little numbers/letters under soda caps -- I never really cared but a friend is in a contest (at www.spriterefreshingfilms.com) and you get 25 votes (instead of 1) if you enter in a lid code - sixteen characters wroth of inscrutability!!
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! Captcha is no good!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I'm now your follower!
Hello I'm back again and I still agree with you.

Thanks for following my blog..following you back as well:)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree...NO MORE CAPTCHA!!
Hi, I'm finally following you back from earlier this week.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should just get rid of the captcha. I don't even moderate my comments. Blogger is pretty good about weeding the spam comments out, so all I have to do is go delete them when I'm in my dashboard. I have everything emailed to me, so I can see them right away. It works.

Yeah, I get those wrong a lot, at least I know it's not just me! Following you from the TGIF blog hop!

i moderate my comments after my blog got loads of spammy ones!
ReplyDeletehi, thanks for the follow; am following you back
Yes, the Captcha prevents new bloggers from commening because it appears like their comment was made and then they do not notice there is more work to the comment being posted. Pain in the butt, surely.
ReplyDeleteI found you on Mrs. Marine and her Blog Stalk Friday, so doing the regular stalking and you can stalk me back at http://www.the-upper-hand.com/2011/05/stalk-hop-friday.html

I personally hate captcha- especially when you are trying to enter a giveaway! :D Ever since i switched to Wordpress from blogger, I have moderated my comments... Most the time its not tooo bad, but there has been days where i have found like 200 "spam" comments in my mod box!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mothers Day! Thanks for the follow at misavingsmama
I cant stand captchas either. Soo annoying! Hi! New follower from blog hop. Following you back from conFRUGAL
ReplyDeleteI agree, let's get rid of Captcha. Thank you for linking up at NOBH, and for spreading the word about getting rid of this annoying "safety" feature. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteI don't like Catpcha either and I just did a blog post on it today after I saw how to get rid of it on someone's else's blog. There is an easy and quick way to disable it. Check on my blog post where I post a link that shows you how. Here's my blog post: http://asliceofsmithlife.blogspot.com/2011/05/say-no-to-captcha-on-comment-forms.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up to NOBH!

I'm right there with you!
ReplyDeleteWhat's even more annoying is the double-whammy - CAPTCHA and moderation. :) CAPTCHA is very annoying - slows me down when I'm trying to visit as many blogs as possible...then there's the 'ooops' times when I think I've left a comment, but the CAPTCHA pops up after I've clicked 'submit'. If I'm in a hurry, I'll most likely have closed that tab as soon as I hit 'submit'...I've only caught myself if the tab didn't close with the first click to see that there's a CAPTCHA waiting to be entered. :)
When I was on Blogger, I just made sure that no one 'Anonoymous' could leave a comment - that took care of any spam I had been receiving prior. Now with self-hosted Wordpress, Askimet filters out any potential spam (and I realized I should probably turn off comments to posts older than 60 days - I was getting a slew of spam on posts that were over a year old...once I did that, no more (or very minimal) spam!) :)

THANK YOU for posting this. DOWN with captcha! It's my biggest pet peeve in the bloggy world!

I sooooooooo agree! I have only had one spam comment and that was so easy to delete. I also have a friend listed as a moderator so she can sweep up too if I am on vacation or something. Its just so easy and they do really make my eyes cross just seeing them. Thanks for saying what we were all thinking. :) Have a great rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! I hate them. Now lets all ban together to get rid of the no reply email too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
I don't use captcha. I moderate comments that are older than 4 days. Most of my regular commentators come before that. I have been overwhelmed by spam. I just deleted 29 which were all caught in my spam folder.
ReplyDeleteHi, following you from the Friday Blog Hop, I hope that you will follow me back. http://granitestatesavers.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI had captcha on my blog when I first started blogging, I didn't realize there was another way. When I realized I could moderate comments, I took off captcha and haven't looked back! I have had one spam comment, did as you did and marked it spam and that's been it!
ReplyDeleteI don't like captcha on other blogs, and if it shows up before I write my comment, I usually will skip writing my comment. It's too much of a pain!
Thanks for stopping by Super Stalker Sunday and linking up again! I'm already a follower! Hope you'll keep linking up every Sunday! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteApril @ Mama on a Green Mission
I hate capta!!! I don't use it. I do get spammers at least once a week. I don't moderate, but I work at home and watch comments pretty closely. Half the time they go to SPAM anyway. I am with you on this....I am also a new follower from the Moody Monday blog hop. You can find me at http:/www.bellycharmsblog.com. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower from the blog hop!!! Thanks for stopping by Always Just a MoM!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great week!!!
Thank for the follow! I agree--I hate Capta! Sometimes I leave the site without commenting when I miss type the combo. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI use Akismet and it does a great job of catching spam!
http://didoodlings.com
I just spoke to my sister-in-law who said that she was on an educational website with her 3rd grade class and came upon a captcha that said fuccr...her and her co-teacher were more than unnerved!
ReplyDeleteI would rather deal with spam on my end with akismet and intensedebate than have captcha on my blog. I was just ranting on twitter about a stupid captcha. In the meantime, I found another plugin by the maker of connection called growmap anti spambot. Apparently, it puts a checkmark for users to click rather than a captcha.
